Join us aboard the legendary tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl, where the Sustainable Ocean Solutions community set sail together for the future.

SOS Summit, San Francisco

The summit gathers global leaders from science, policy, finance, and innovation to shape the future of the ocean. It offers interactive panels, expert presentations, and workshops designed to spark bold ideas and real collaboration.

The goal of the summit is to build strategic partnerships and launch pioneering initiatives that unlock the ocean’s capacity to provide real solutions to the climate crisis. Alongside, mobilizing venture capital for science-based innovation and ocean sustainability.

The program will explore untapped opportunities and practical pathways toward resilient and sustainable blue economies.

SOS Voyage, San Francisco to San Diego

The expedition is a continuation of the summit, offering real-time ocean science and turning ideas into action aboard the iconic Statsraad Lehmkuhl. As part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science, the voyage offers a shared space to explore ocean challenges, build connections, and spark leadership for a sustainable future:

  • Become a part of the crew
Live and work as a sailor on board. No experience is needed. As a sailor trainee, you will take part in daily life at sea: handling sails, standing watch, living in a hammock, learning teamwork, discipline, and traditional seamanship.
  • Share cross-disciplinary conversations
Sail alongside scientists, students, investors, activists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. Through shared experience and open dialogue, you will co-create ideas and partnerships in a truly unique setting.
  • Get the tools for change in the floating classroom
Join workshops, lectures, and discussions on climate, biodiversity, ocean innovation, technology, and leadership. The ship becomes a sailing classroom, linking knowledge with action, offering a new perspective on the ocean and the tools to drive meaningful change.

Program

SOS reception

November 5th, San Francisco, aboard the Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl

Norway is home to some of the world’s most advanced maritime technologies - particularly in zero-emission transportation and ocean sustainability. In this session, you’ll meet four Norwegian companies offering practical solutions for cleaner, more resilient maritime operations.

From electric propulsion and charging infrastructure to air technology and seabed cleanup, these technologies are designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable maritime infrastructure. Several are already being piloted or introduced in the U.S., with others well-positioned to follow.

Whether you're a port operator, vessel owner, investor, or policymaker, this seminar offers a spotlight on technologies shaping the next wave of maritime innovation on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • 14.30 – 16.30: Seminar by Innovation Norway
  • 16.30 – 18.30: Reception by Consulate General in San Francisco

PROGRAM

Living artform

For 50 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet has challenged and reimagined what a string quartet can be. Founded when the form was largely rooted in long-established Western European traditions, Kronos has helped transform the quartet into a living art form that responds to the people and issues of our time.

At the Sustainable Ocean Solutions Summit 2025, Kronos will perform for the SOS Community—setting a bold, reflective tone for collaboration, creativity, and ocean action.

David Harrington (violin), Gabriela Díaz (violin), Ayane Kozasa (viola), and Paul Wiancko (cello)

SOS Voyage

November 7–11, San Francisco to San Diego

The expedition is acontinuation of the summit, offering real-time ocean science and turningideas into action aboard the iconic Statsraad Lehmkuhl. As part of the UN Decade of OceanScience, the voyage offers a shared space to explore ocean challenges, build connections, andspark leadership for a sustainable future:

  • Become a part of the crew
  • Share cross-disciplinary conversations
  • Get the tools for change in the floating classroom

Focus during Summit and Voyage

Transformative leadership was introduced at our first SOS gathering in 2023. It will be a pillar at SOS 2025, both as a workshop during the SOS Summit in San Francisco and then as a leadership development session aboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl during the voyage to San Diego.

  • Radical Transformational Leadership - How can we be a part of the change?, led by Dorothy Dankel, Senior Research Scientist, SINTEF Ocean
  • A ship as an innovation tool - sailing for a solution, led by Johan Brand, We Are Human & Malin Haara, Maritime Bergen
  • Cross-border collaboration, led by Sharon Røe, Innovation Norway & Anne Park, Sustainable Ocean Alliance
  • Engaging for ocean solutions - why does it matter? led by Hilde Holdhus, Sarsia
  • The Importance of storytelling & technology to save the ocean, led by Sofie Odfjell, SOS & Marte Mjånes Torkildsen, VilVite
