Transformative Leadership

October 20, 2025

Transformative leadership was introduced at SOS 2023 and will be a pillar at SOS 2025, featured in San Francisco and aboard Statsraad Lehmkuhl en route to San Diego.

The session will be led by Dorothy Dankel, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist, SINTEF Ocean

Dorothy Dankel is a transdisciplinary scientist in sustainable ocean governance and systems thinking. She bridges natural and social sciences to show how innovation, ethics, and leadership can transform the Ocean sector.

Inspired by Karen O’Brien’s Three Spheres of Transformation, this session guides participants to source personal and universal values to build the foundation for breakthrough initiatives.

Through hands-on reflection, participants connect personal motivation to systemic change – turning insight into collaboration, and collaboration into lasting impact for the the leadership we need for the Ocean we want.

Voyage Workshops aboard Statsraad Lehmkuhl

Following the Summit in San Francisco, participants will continue their SOS journey at sea—sailing aboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl from San Francisco to San Diego as part of the One Ocean Expedition 2025–2026.

At sea, the ship becomes a floating innovation lab and leadership arena. Through daily workshops and reflection sessions, participants will explore how values, collaboration, storytelling, and technology can accelerate action for the ocean.

Each day builds on a core dimension of transformative leadership:

  • "Engaging for ocean solutions - why does it matter?” Hilde Holdhus, Sarsia & Schmidt Marine
  • “Cross-border collaboration” Sharon Røe, Innovation Norway & Anne Park, Sustainable Ocean Alliance
  • “The importance of storytelling & technology to save the ocean” Andri Snær Magnason, Sofie Odfjell, SOS & Marte Mjånes Torkildsen, VilVite
  • “A ship as an innovation tool” - sailing for solution” Malin Haara, Maritime Bergen & Johan Brand, We Are Human

This voyage connects personal reflection with collective action—transforming insight from the Summit into strategies, partnerships, and leadership practices for the ocean we want.
